Shylaja Ramprasath
Shylaja began her journey into dance at the age of three under the tutelage of Natarasankottai Shri MA Krishnan. Over the years she has studied under several Gurus and become fluent in three different styles of Bharatanatyam, including that of Kalakshetra, learning the differences in body expression through stance, gestures and footwork from school to school.
Her particular expertise is in the realm of abhinaya, with her clarity of expression and precise command of the idiom earning her the title “Abhinaya Kala Jyothi”. After her arangetram in 1995, Shylaja sought a first class diploma in Bharatanatyam from the University of Madras, India, and became a full-fledged Dance Expert under the guidance of Shri. Chitoor P. Shanmugham in 2004. As an active participant and choreographer in dance competitions in schools and colleges, she achieved the ‘Best Dancer’ award for five consecutive years in Inter Collegiate Cultural Competitions. Her high quality of art is recognized by Doordarshan, the national broadcasting network of India, and she has performed two major master pieces on air.
Shylaja opened her own dance institute, ‘Nrithyopasana Mandali’ in 2005, Chennai – India. A group of her students has successfully accomplished their completion of “Salangai Pooja” under her guidance. Subsequently she moved to Winnipeg where she served as a Senior Dance Instructor with the India School of Dance and Music; guiding as an assistant instructor of Smt.Shantha Ponnudurai in completion of three “Aradhana” sets of students. Shylaja has been an active part of Manohar Performing Arts since 2011, and was featured as Gargi in “The Game” (2012) as well as had an opportunity to participate in “20/20 Manohar” Show (2013), experienced her choreographic skill set for the dance piece “Krishna Tandav”. She has also been an invited performance artist for many community event shows including Folklarama.
Shylaja is a founding director, owner and senior dance instructor in Winnipeg’s BRT Academy of Dance & Music, created in collaboration with Manohar Performing Arts. Her students have won Gold and Special Judges Choice awards at several Provincial Dance competitions from 2013 including Thunderstruck Dance Competition, Canadian National Dance Championship as well as Dance Manitoba Festival, where the detailing in her choreography has also been specially singled out. Her current senior students have successfully accomplished their completion of “Salangai Pooja” (2014) under her guidance both theoretically & practically. As a choreographer, her skill set reflected during the whole dance drama Show “Krishna Leela”(2015) experiencing in detailed projection of playful path of Lord Shri Krishna; also reflecting her skill set in the recent dance show ” Sadhana” a repertoire (thematic presentation) showcasing different groups of BRT Students, their levels and practice routines to the community. She is a member of International Dance Council CID and offers International Certificate of Dance Studies to her students.
